Window Tint VLT Calculator: Glass + Film
Free planning tool · MotorPeak Supply
Estimate how your existing glass and added film combine. Compare front side glass with rear privacy glass before you choose a shade.
Use measured starting glass where possible. The starting values below are examples, not measurements of your vehicle. Results estimate visible light transmission, not appearance, heat rejection or legal compliance.
Front side glass
Measure this pane before adding new film. Example: 70%.
24.5%
Estimated combined VLT
Rear / privacy glass
Measure separately from the front. Example: 25%.
17.5%
Estimated combined VLT
Check the film data basis. These inputs represent the film's own transmission. Some specification sheets report film already applied to reference glass; multiplying that number by your glass again is not the same calculation. Ask the manufacturer or installer which value to use. Nominal shade labels are only an approximation.
What happens when you use the same film?
Different starting glass produces different finished transmission. This table uses the front and rear glass values above with illustrative film transmission values.
| Film transmission | On front glass | On rear glass |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 3.5% | 1.25% |
| 10% | 7% | 2.5% |
| 15% | 10.5% | 3.75% |
| 20% | 14% | 5% |
| 25% | 17.5% | 6.25% |
| 30% | 21% | 7.5% |
| 35% | 24.5% | 8.75% |
| 50% | 35% | 12.5% |
| 70% | 49% | 17.5% |
How to calculate glass plus film VLT
Estimated combined VLT = glass VLT × film transmission ÷ 100. For example, 70 × 35 ÷ 100 = 24.5%. Light passes through both materials, so percentages multiply rather than add or subtract.
This simplified model treats each transmission as a single value. Real glass, films, coatings, spectral response and measurement tolerances can change the result. Confirm the finished pane with a suitable light meter.
Common questions
Will 35% film make the whole window 35%?
Not necessarily. Existing glass also filters light. In the example above, glass at 70% and film transmission at 35% produce an estimate of 24.5%.
Can I match front windows to rear privacy glass?
Measure the front and rear separately, then compare film samples on the actual panes. Matching VLT alone does not guarantee the same color, reflectance or appearance. Adding film cannot make dark glass lighter.
Does a lower VLT mean better heat rejection?
VLT measures visible light, not solar heat performance. Compare documented solar specifications for the exact film and shade. MotorPeak's current nano-carbon dyed kits are not ceramic.
Does the result tell me a shade is permitted?
No. Window position, vehicle type, reflectance, exemptions and other requirements can matter in addition to combined VLT. Check current official requirements for your vehicle before ordering; this calculator does not make a compliance determination.
Can I enter a reading from glass that already has film?
The calculation then estimates adding another layer over the existing assembly. That does not establish that layering is suitable or supported by a warranty. Ask the film supplier or installer whether old film should be removed first.
Turn your comparison into a kit plan
Record your year, make, model, body or cab style, door count and rear-glass layout. Choose each window group separately and confirm the pattern before installation.
Technical background: the IWFA Automotive Education Guide explains combined glass-and-film measurements. 3M's film specifications illustrate why the reference-glass basis matters. These are educational references; their product specifications do not describe MotorPeak film.
